When we build or update your website, we consider not only how the design looks but also how easy it is for people to read and interact with. To do this, we use a color contrast checker behind the scenes to make sure your logo, color palette, and fonts are all easily readable. While you don’t need to use the tool yourself, here’s what it does and why it matters.
How We Use Color Contrast Checking
As we apply your logo, colors, and text styles across the site, we check the “contrast ratio” to make sure the text is easy to read against its background color. A good contrast ratio ensures that anyone, including those with visual impairments, can comfortably read your content.
What Counts as “Compliant” Contrast?
There are specific standards, called WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), that guide us on what makes a color combination accessible. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Basic Level (WCAG Level AA):
- For regular text (most text on your site), we aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1.
- For large or bold text (titles or emphasized sections), we aim for at least 3:1.
Enhanced Level (WCAG Level AAA):
- For regular text, we aim for a higher ratio of 7:1 to provide extra readability.
- For large or bold text, a 4.5:1 ratio meets this higher standard.
Icons, Graphics, and User Interface Elements:
- The contrast ratio here should be at least 3:1 for easy navigation and interaction.
What is Considered Large Text?
In accessibility standards, “large text” refers to:
- Text that is at least 18px, or
- Text that is 14px and bold.
Why This Matters for Your Website
This contrast checking helps ensure your website is accessible and user-friendly, enabling all visitors to read your content comfortably. Although you don’t need to worry about using the tool yourself, know that we’re keeping your colors, fonts, and logos accessible and attractive for everyone who visits your site!
